DBT for Adolescents

Welcome to our Integrative DBT for Adolescents Program

Navigating the challenges of adolescence can be overwhelming, both for teens and their families. The Integrative Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for Adolescents program at IMPACT is a specialized and comprehensive approach designed to empower teenagers with the skills they need to thrive emotionally, socially, and academically.

Why choose the Integrative DBT for Adolescents Program at IMPACT?

At the heart of our program is a commitment to understanding and supporting the unique needs of teenagers. DBT for Adolescents is an evidence-based therapy that combines cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness strategies. It's specifically tailored to address the emotional intensity, identity development, and social pressures that adolescents face. DBT-A is an effective treatment for a wide range of diagnostic presentations, including depression, self-harm and suicidal behaviors, trauma, emerging borderline personality disorder traits, family conflict, and high risk behaviors. Our program is integrative. The foundation of the program is built around DBT-A and we utilize interventions from other treatment modalities as well including attachment-based frameworks, cognitive behavior therapy, family systems, and psychodynamic models.

Program Highlights

IMPACT’s integrative DBT-A program is for teenagers aged 13-18 (enrolled in middle or high school). The program utilizes 5 modules of DBT-A: Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Distress Tolerance, Interpersonal Effectiveness, and Walking the Middle Path. In our weekly group, parents will learn the techniques of each module. The other components of the program include weekly individual therapy for teens and a dedicated team of clinicians who work together to support you and your family.

  • Tailored Curriculum: Our program is designed to resonate with teens, offering a curriculum that is both engaging and relevant to their experiences. From emotional regulation to interpersonal effectiveness, each module is crafted to equip teens with practical skills they can apply in their daily lives. We also provide DBT in a more flexible and integrative way than standard DBT-A programs.

  • Our Therapists: Our team of licensed therapists and postdoctoral fellows specialize in working with adolescents, providing a safe and non-judgmental space for them to explore their emotions, build resilience, and develop coping mechanisms.

  • Parental Involvement: We believe that a strong support system is crucial for success. Our program encourages active involvement from parents and caregivers, fostering open communication and collaboration between families and therapists.

Program Components

Our integrative DBT-A Program is designed to help teens needing support in at least three of the following five areas: confusion about self, impulsivity, lack of emotional control, interpersonal problems, and adolescent-family dilemmas. The length of our program is 6 months.

  • Weekly individual therapy is focused on identifying and targeting the main problem areas in a teen’s life and applying relevant DBT-A skills to their daily lives. Individual sessions also integrate a range of interventions, blended seamlessly with DBT-A. Individual therapy in IMPACT’s Integrative DBT-A program is designed to target the specific needs of each client. There is an option for multiple individual sessions per week.

  • Mondays, 7:00 pm - 8:15 pm (on Zoom)

Our DBT-A Parent Group is structured like a class. Groups typically include parents from 5 families and meet for 24 weeks. New families are welcome to join ongoing groups periodically. Parents will learn skills and receive support from one another within a DBT framework. Group leaders will help parents learn the skills so they can implement them at home. Groups combine teaching, discussion and practice exercises. Groups run 75 minutes and require a 6-month commitment.

The group focuses on the following skills modules:

Core Mindfulness Skills: Teaches increasing awareness of emotions, thoughts, and action urges, increasing attentional control, reducing reactivity to painful thoughts and emotions, and developing a stable sense of self.

Distress Tolerance: Targets decreasing impulsive behaviors through increasing capacity for tolerating high levels of distress by learning techniques for self-soothing and distraction. Impulsive behaviors may include emotional outbursts, drug and alcohol use, missing school, nonsuicidal self-injurious behavior, and risky sexual behaviors.

Emotion Regulation: Teaches ways to reduce emotional vulnerability and reactivity and to recover more quickly from extreme mood states.

Walking the Middle Path: Targets common teen and parent relationship conflicts through discussion of dialectical thinking, validation, and application learning principles to the self and others.

Interpersonal Effectiveness: Focuses on building and maintaining positive relationships through directly teaching relationship skills.

  • Our clinicians meet regularly as a consultation team to support one another and think creatively about the best ways to help teens and their families.

  • Parents have the opportunity to work on specific problem behaviors and parenting goals by combining techniques learned in the skills group with parent management training. Offered on an as needed basis.

  • Teens who have completed the full 6-month program have the opportunity to join our ongoing DBT Process Group that offers the chance to utilize the many skills they have learned in a deeper way. This group is facilitated by one of our expert therapists who is trained in DBT-A and intensive group psychotherapy. Available only to adolescents who have completed the program.
